Israeli Leaders React as Trump Claims Second Term in White House

Netanyahu welcomes Trump's return to the White House, celebrating a renewed U.S.-Israel alliance

With Donald Trump appearing poised to reclaim the U.S. presidency after Tuesday's election, Israeli leaders have quickly responded to the news. The businessman-turned-politician, who declared victory early, is set to resume his role as commander in chief, leading the world’s most powerful military and largest economy. The anticipated return of Trump to the White House has sparked enthusiastic reactions from Israel’s top leaders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first to congratulate Trump, calling his election performance "history's greatest comeback." Netanyahu, who has led Israel through escalating conflict in Gaza and Lebanon, voiced optimism about the renewed U.S.-Israel alliance.

“Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America,” he stated. Despite previous tension over Trump’s criticism of Israel's handling of the Gaza war, Netanyahu is widely believed to prefer Trump over the Biden administration, which has urged Israel to adopt cease-fires and reduce civilian casualties.

The current conflict in Gaza was triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the abduction of approximately 250 others. Since then, Israeli forces have intensified their offensive against Hamas in Gaza, leading to over 43,000 Palestinian casualties, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Israel has also launched attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, another Iranian-backed group, causing over 3,000 casualties, as reported by the Lebanese health ministry.

Netanyahu and Trump share a moment, celebrating renewed U.S.-Israel ties

Israeli President Isaac Herzog, whose position is largely ceremonial, also extended his congratulations to Trump, calling him a “true and dear friend of Israel” and a “champion of peace and cooperation in our region.” Herzog expressed his eagerness to work with Trump to strengthen U.S.-Israel ties, enhance security in the Middle East, and uphold shared values. “On behalf of the Jewish and democratic State of Israel, and all our people, I wish you much success,” Herzog added.

The Biden administration had pressed Israel for cease-fires in both Gaza and Lebanon, a stance likely to shift under Trump’s anticipated policies, aligning closer with Israel’s hardline approach in the region. As Israeli leaders express hope for strengthened ties, Trump’s return to office signals a potential new chapter in U.S.-Israel relations amidst the ongoing conflicts.
