Trump Holds Early Leads in Michigan and Pennsylvania, But Key Democratic Areas Yet to Report

As vote counting progresses in Michigan and Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump holds early leads in both states, but large Democratic strongholds have yet to fully report. According to a recent update from Decision Desk HQ, about 25% of the estimated votes have been counted in Michigan, where Trump is currently ahead by just over 15,000 votes. This lead could shift as more votes come in from Wayne County, a major Democratic area that contributed nearly 900,000 votes in the 2020 election. Only a small portion of Wayne County’s votes have been counted so far, and the county is expected to lean heavily toward Vice President Kamala Harris.

Michigan played a pivotal role in the 2020 election, when President Joe Biden narrowly flipped the state after Trump’s 2016 victory there. The state was part of Trump’s breakthrough in the “blue wall” when he carried Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, three states historically inclined toward Democrats.

In Pennsylvania, with just under 60% of votes counted, Trump leads Harris by over 110,000 votes, according to current tallies. Trump has gained strong support in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, where Republican voters have traditionally been dominant. However, vote counting has been slower in Philadelphia and its surrounding counties, areas that have a history of favoring Democratic candidates. In 2020, these counties contributed significantly to Biden’s win in Pennsylvania, tipping the state blue after extended counting in urban regions.

With much of the vote yet to come from Democratic strongholds in both Michigan and Pennsylvania, the current lead for Trump may shift as these areas report their results. The pace and impact of vote counting in these crucial battlegrounds could shape the outcome of this highly competitive election.
