A 24-year-old man from Illinois has been taken into custody after allegedly creating a disturbance in a voting line and then physically assaulting an election judge. The incident was reported by the local police.
The event took place on Sunday, around 11 a.m., when Orland Park police officers were called to the Orland Park Township Office in Illinois. They responded to reports of a man, identified as Daniel Schmidt, who was said to be causing a disturbance in the line of people waiting to vote.
According to the Orland Park Police Department's official statement, Schmidt entered the building and moved ahead of several voters who were already in line, attempting to access the voting area without waiting his turn.
An election judge, who was stationed at the entrance to ensure order, asked Schmidt to go to the back of the line and wait for his turn. However, Schmidt refused to comply with the judge's instruction.
A second election judge was then called to assist in managing the situation. Despite repeated requests to go to the back of the line, Schmidt declined to do so. Instead, he attempted to push past the second election judge to enter the voting area.
The election judge, along with other staff members present, intervened to prevent Schmidt from forcing his way through. In response, Schmidt began shouting profanities and then struck the election judge in the face, which caused the judge's glasses to fall off.
At that point, several bystanders stepped in to restrain Schmidt until law enforcement could arrive. Police officers found Schmidt inside the Township office. Even after officers arrived, Schmidt reportedly resisted being arrested.
Upon being taken to the Orland Park Police Headquarters, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office was contacted. The office approved several charges against Schmidt, including two counts of Aggravated Battery to a victim over the age of 60, which is classified as a Class 3 felony. Schmidt also faces two counts of Aggravated Battery in a public place, also classified as Class 3 felonies. In addition, he has been charged with five misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, as well as one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.
Schmidt was held in custody overnight and subsequently transported to the Bridgeview Courthouse for a detention hearing. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are still gathering more information related to the incident.
